Happy Easter!! Congratulations on making through 40 days of Lent!! I hope that you have been able to see and feel the results of your efforts, no matter how small the change in behavior may have seemed, and that it has helped motivate you to continue on towards new goals.
I also want to thank those of you that took the time to share your success stories with me. It has been a true pleasure to work with each of you over these past 40 days, and the experience has given me a heart full of joy. :)
The 40 days of Lent may have come to an end, but hopefully the realization that you have the power to reach your goals has just taken root!!
Self-care is not a common topic of conversation. That may be because the idea of it seems generally viewed as "selfish" care, or something wildly indulgent and to be ashamed of.
Instead of working to develop the practice of self-care, we work hard to give everything we can to work, spouses, children, friends and family. The idea being that we are doing the "right" thing by being all things to all people - sound familiar? But this behavior comes with a price. On one hand we get to feel very important, needed, and in control. While on the other hand, feeling like the ONLY ONE to handle it all, can often leave a person feeling resentful, unhappy, and with very little left for themselves. And that isn't healthy either. The real fact is that there is nothing honorable about being a martyr. It will only end up making you, and everyone around you, miserable.
Most people feel awkward or guilty when it comes to taking time for themselves. But self-care is something that needs to be seen as the valuable practice it is, for it is what will sustain you when you are needed the most. If it helps, try to reframe the idea of taking care of yourself as the best way to be there for the ones that you love. They want you to be healthy and happy!
Start with simple actions, and even those will have huge payouts. Think about what you feel you are missing. Is it time to yourself? (Like a hot bath, a long walk, or just some quite time away from the demands of anyone else.) Or maybe it's social interaction? (Make a date with a friend for coffee, or a walk.)
Try to find 30 minutes each day just for YOU. Fill that time up with something that makes you feel refreshed and recharged. I promise you that there is nothing selfish about taking time to take care of yourself. You will be happier for it, and so will those around you.
You can live a healthy lifestyle in the real world without giving up everything that makes you happy.
