You have probably heard about Vitamin D by now. It’s being talked about more and more in the media and amongst nutrition experts. And, for very good reason.
This incredibly important nutrient is essential for health. Research suggests that it may have benefits such as improving immune function, preventing disease, reducing inflammation, boosting mood, building bones, and even easing muscle aches. But, it can be hard for many of us to get enough of it during certain times of the year.
The reason for this is simple; our bodies makes Vitamin D when we are exposed to sunlight. The sun is actually our greatest source of Vitamin D. So, that means during the winter months when it’s cold outside and we can’t expose our bodies to the sun, that we may not get the levels of Vitamin D from the sun that we need for our bodies to function optimally.
While the sun is the easiest way to get this nutrient, it isn't the only way. Vitamin D can be obtained through some other sources as well.
Here are a few ways to get more Vitamin D:
1. Fatty Fish
Fatty Fish like wild caught salmon, mackerel, cod, sardines and tuna (don’t overdo the tuna, however, because of the mercury) are full of Vitamin D. Buy these fish fresh or frozen, and of course wild caught, or pick up some that are packed in a can.
2. Whole Eggs
Eggs, specifically egg yolks, are a great source of Vitamin D. You’ll need to use the whole egg to get the highest levels of Vitamin D. There are other nutrients that are only found in the yolk of the egg, so if you are free of health conditions preventing you from doing otherwise, I recommend eating the whole egg (and look for organic, pasture-raised eggs).
3. Shiitake Mushrooms
Shiitake mushrooms are a great source of Vitamin D. Buy them fresh when you can, but dried shiitakes are available in most stores as well. They are great to toss into soups, or added into any of your main course meals for extra flavoring.
4. Vitamin D Supplement

From February 18th - April 5th I will be running a brand new pilot coaching program. (This falls during the Lenten season, however you do not have to observe Lent to take part.)
THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
I want you to join me, and take these 6 weeks to invest in yourself. YOUR HEALTH, YOUR HAPPINESS, YOUR NEEDS. I know, it sounds radical. You may even be tempted to say it sounds selfish - but nothing could be further from the truth.
This is a focused format for you to improve your health, starting from where you are RIGHT now, and in whatever (big or small) steps you are comfortable with. Our focus will include nutrition, daily movement, rest, hydration, stress management and fun.
Consistency will be our key. Making small and steady changes that you will be able to build upon to give you the lasting benefits of improved health.
This is NOT a diet. The goal is to incorporate nourishing changes into your lifestyle that will offer you the healthy results that you want. I want these changes to become HABITS for you. Along the way I will help you with whatever nutritional path you choose for yourself. That may be Weight Watchers, or counting calories. Personally, my focus is to do a better job at eating clean. (Which basically means eating as much nutritionally dense, unprocessed food and limit my intake of refined sugar.)
WHEN YOU ENROLL
Once you register you will receive a brief questionnaire so that we can get to know each other, and so that I can get an understanding of what your goals are for this program.
When the program starts you will get an email from me daily. Motivation, handouts, journal prompts and recipes are all on the list. And since this is the pilot program I'm anxious to hear feedback from you as to what you feel helps you along, as well as what doesn't.
You will have access to a private Facebook forum for group support. Your level of participation is up to you, but the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it. :)
You will also have unlimited email access to me for the duration of the program. I want to provide whatever support that I can; from answering your health questions and offering support, to dishing up some tough love when those old excuses start creeping back into your head.
The cost for this program is $100, and registration will be limited since this is our first round. :)
